We updated the kitchen in this traditional, suburban home to be truly functional for family life and entertaining. It is a central space; now open and connected to the breakfast room, formal dining room and entry, family room, patio and backyard. It is modern in our use of clean forms and simple lines, but we used a traditional palette and gorgeous, warm materials.

NEW CONSTRUCTION
This modern farmhouse, located in Massachusetts, is a primary residence designed to engage the out-of-doors on all sides while making use of its spectacular site. It is large enough to accommodate the entire family for holidays but also has a manageable core for daily living. All the entertaining spaces address the landscape. The large custom kitchen is designed for the hard-working pair of gardeners who like to bring the outdoors in through flowers and food from their extensive garden and small farm. There is an east facing breakfast patio adjacent to the kitchen. The porch, with an integrated grilling area and retractable screens, is accessed through the living room or via the bar that connects to the kitchen. The living room is flanked by the kitchen and porch with western views to the horizon and an eastern clerestory that gathers ambient afternoon light. The pool is laid out parallel to and enjoys beautiful, long, western views. The public spaces of the house - entry, hallways and pool room - are all paved with the same natural-cleft bluestone that is used on the exterior to enhance the sense of continuous pathways throughout the volumes and programmatic elements of the project.

RENOVATION
With this project, we created a more functional space for a family of five. A new mudroom entry and powder room connects to the once dark and cramped, now spacious and open kitchen and large breakfast nook, abundant with natural light from the adjacent deck. The master bath is beautiful, light, open and functional. A new pantry and laundry room were also included in this renovation.

A family compound located on a large cove in Maine, with open fields on the entry side and gorgeous coastal frontage surrounding the back side. The retreat consists of a main house for gathering of family and friends, a sail loft for sleeping and playing, and a private master cabin for the homeowners to escape the hubbub.

This modern, shaker handrail was designed by md+a for the Surrenden Farm project. It features a unique twist and curve that allows for continuous glide of the hand down the rail.

RENOVATION
As part of the larger renovation of a Brookline home, we designed a light, airy and functional master bath in an elegant, traditional style. By opening up a closet and an adjacent 3 season porch, we simplified the space, bringing light and openness to what was orinigally a dark, convoulted bathroom.
